Sonja McKenzie for Portland City Council

Community Centered Leadership

The City of Portland is at a unique moment in time. The opportunity to change the way city government works. It’s time to create a city government in Portland that works for everyone. I am running for Portland City Council because I care deeply about Portland.

I want to be a part of the change in the way we make decisions for our community. We need representation in East Portland that is experienced in listening to the community, deliberating ideas, making decisions and creating policies that serve the interests of their community.

I bring the right experience and passion for my community to be a part of the change in Portland City Council.

My Vision

INTEGRITY

Integrity has been a key value for me as a person and as a leader and as a parent. the most important tenets for integrity for me are expressing gratitude for others, evaluating honesty and openness, taking responsibility and accountability for my actions, and respecting others and those around you no matter where you are

COMMUNITY

I believe that members of every community should have a voice and be provided the opportunity to speak and share their concerns about their lives and or situations. I believe strongly that as elected leaders the community is an essential component of our work and if the community is not given agency then we are missing an important piece as we make policy and budget situations in our roles as elected leaders. You provide constituents with a sense of belonging when they are given a voice. I believe that leading with a sense of community can change everything.

COLLABORATION

I  believe in the strengths of collaborative decision-making. I have had the most success in my community work when I have worked in an environment where teamwork, open communication, and mutual respect were practiced. Listening to everyone’s perspective, evaluating risks and reaching a consensus, and then making decisions based on those collaborative discussions.

“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members… a heart of grace and a soul generated by love.”

A Proud Portlander.

I moved to Oregon from Katy, TX 25 years ago and consider Oregon my home. I am a proud mom of 4 young adults. I moved to East Multnomah County 12 years ago and found a community where I could raise my family. I believe in living a life of community service. I have seen lives change when people come together for a common purpose.

I have centered my life’s work on community engagement, advocacy, education and literacy. I believe that taking care of our communities is the most important promise we can keep for our children and their future.
